Let's Weigh the Options

Chunks for making decisions together — deciding, comparing, and settling on something.

Let's talk

1.Tell me about a decision you made quickly, without thinking too much.
2.Is there a decision you're trying to make right now, big or small?
3.Do you usually decide things alone, or do you like a second opinion?
4.What's something you find really hard to decide on — food, clothes, anything?

Choosing where to eat

A:So, where do you want to eat tonight — Italian or Thai?
B:Honestly, I don't mind either way. It's up to you.
A:Let's weigh the options. Italian is closer, but Thai has better reviews.
B:On one hand, closer is convenient. On the other hand, I really trust good reviews.
A:True. I'm leaning towards Thai, then.
B:That works for me. It depends on how hungry you are, though — Thai takes longer to cook.
A:Good point. Let's go with Italian instead, then. Faster is better tonight.
B:Sounds good to me.

Decide together

Pick any real decision you need to make, or invent one — what to cook, where to go this weekend, which phone to buy, anything. Talk it through together until you reach a final decision. Don't stop halfway — you must actually decide on something by the end.

  • Use at least 4 different phrases from today's cards.
  • Use "either... or" or "neither... nor" at least twice during the conversation.
  • Finish with a clear decision — say it out loud: "So, let's go with..."
One rule: if you don't actually have a preference, pretend you do. A real decision needs two real opinions.
