Real or imagined?
First conditional (real/likely) or second conditional (imagined/unlikely) — the other half of the sentence tells you which one.
Look at the other clause first. Will or a present-tense verb → it's real, use the present simple in the gap. Would or a past-tense verb → it's imagined, use the past simple (or were) in the gap.
